Three conditions have to be true at the same time. If any one fails, the odds turn against you.

- You are starting within 24 to 48 hours of the water arriving
A burst supply line under a kitchen sink, caught the same morning, is the classic DIY case.
A dishwasher that leaked quietly for three weeks under the cabinets is not, even though the puddle looks smaller.

The water category test that decides it
Restorers sort water into three categories, and the category sets what you are allowed to save.

- Category 3 is grossly contaminated, including sewage, groundwater, and any water that has sat long enough to grow bacteria
Category 1 degrades over time. Clean water left on a floor for 48 hours becomes Category 2 on its own.
Category 3 is not a DIY job at any size. That is protective equipment and containment, not a shop vac and a weekend.

The DIY water damage restoration steps, in order
- Stop the water, then cut power to the wet area if the water is anywhere near outlets or cords
- Photograph every room and every wet item before you move a single thing
- Extract standing water with a wet vacuum or a pump, working from the far corner back
- Pull up carpet and pad, and remove baseboards so the wall base can breathe
- Take out wet insulation and any drywall that is soft, swollen, or was under water
- Wipe hard surfaces down, then set air movers and a dehumidifier and leave them running
- Check moisture readings daily until they match a dry part of the same house
Order matters more than speed. Extraction before drying, because a dehumidifier pulling water out of the air is far slower than a vacuum.
Do not put the carpet back until the subfloor under it reads dry. Reinstalling early is the most common redo in DIY work.
Drywall that took water at the base usually gets cut back a foot or two. Whether wet drywall can be dried depends on how far it wicked.

Buy a pin-type moisture meter. They cost roughly $20 to $50 and they are the only reason to trust that you are finished.
Skip the ozone generators and the fogging sprays. They cover odour rather than removing the water that causes it.
How to know when it is actually dry
Dry to the touch means nothing. The surface dries first while the framing and subfloor stay wet underneath.
Take a reading from an unaffected wall in the same house first. That is your dry standard, and it varies by climate and season.
Then read the wet area daily and write the numbers down. You are looking for a steady downward trend toward that baseline.
Flat readings for two days in a row mean the air is saturated or the equipment is undersized, not that you are done.
Most rooms take three to five days, and plaster or hardwood take longer. Realistic wall drying times are worth reading before you book the rental.
What DIY water damage restoration cannot fix
Some water goes where you cannot follow it, and no amount of surface effort reaches it.
- Water inside a wall cavity behind intact drywall, where insulation holds it for weeks
- Water under a floating floor or a glued-down hardwood, which traps it against the subfloor
- Water that ran along a joist bay and dropped into a room you have not looked at
- Water that reached ductwork, where drying it is a mechanical job rather than a cleaning one
- Anything sewage-related, which is a decontamination job, not a drying job
Professionals find these with thermal cameras and probe meters, then open the cavity, dry it, and prove it is dry.
Patching over a wet cavity is the single most expensive DIY mistake, because mold grows inside and shows up months later.
